With the growth in-home health care, at Medi-cal Benefits, we monitor the market to help our customers and their families understand which companies may be best for their individual needs.

On Thursday, November 13, LexisNexis released it’s 2019 Top 100 Home Health and Hospice Agencies Rankings. LexisNexis rankings are created to understand the business dynamics, and we examine this data to identify which of the 12,000 licensed home health care agencies are growing in our local California neighborhoods.

In reviewing this data, it seems as though the top home health care agencies are getting bigger, often by acquiring competitors. For example, AccentCare, which is the 5th largest provider with 175 locations in 16 states, including local offices in Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, and Claremont, had announced earlier in the year that it was acquired by the private equity firm Advent International.

According to LexisNexis, the top 10 home health care agencies control over 25% of the market nationwide, suggesting consolidation in the market. Size matters, as does market density in the home health care as this helps these companies control costs yet serve as many people as possible in a large market like California.

In February of 2019, the National Center for Health Statistics published the “Long-term Care Providers and Services Users in the United States 2015-2016” found that the majority of the home health agencies, hospices, nursing homes, and residential care communities were for profit, while the minority of adult day service centers were for- profit. This study suggests the growth of chain-affiliated services, which is also represented by the LexisNexis survey. Home health care helps seniors live independently in their home, apartment, or condo, sometimes with a chronic illness. Home health care provides a wide range of services and can delay the need for the senior to require skilled nursing home care.
